CAPABILITIES / SWISS-TYPE CNC TURNING

Swiss machined parts for small, slender designs

We machine slender shafts, pins and small precision turned parts on 16 Swiss-type lathes in our own factory in Dongguan.

On runs of 10,000+ pcs, we work out the process to the second, so the last batch runs like the first.

SWISS-TYPE RANGE

Swiss-type range and terms

NOW CNC makes Swiss-type turned parts up to Ø34 mm and 150 mm long, with tolerances down to 0.005 mm, in trial runs from 200 pieces and production runs from 2,000. Tolerances on your drawing apply as drawn.

Micro machining for small turned parts: from Ø0.5 to 10 mm, these are made mainly on our Swiss-type lathes.

PROCESS FIT

When Swiss-type turning is the right route

A good fit

  • Slender shafts and pinsLong sections with a small diameter, where the guide bushing keeps the bar supported next to the tool.
  • Small parts with side featuresFlats, cross holes and slots milled in the same cycle as turning on live-tool machines.
  • Repeat production from bar stockProduction runs from 2,000 pieces, where one proven program runs across releases.

Better on another route

  • Larger or longer partsOver Ø34 mm or 150 mm long: we route these to our mill-turn machines. Mill-turn services
  • Short, stocky turned partsA guide bushing adds little when the part is short and rigid; a conventional or mill-turn lathe is usually the better route. All production equipment
  • Block-shaped milled partsNot our focus. Send the drawing and we assess them case by case.

HOW IT WORKS

Guide-bush support and live tooling

Support for slender work

In guide-bush mode, the guide bushing supports the bar stock close to the cutting point as it advances. The unsupported section under cutting load stays short, so long, slender diameters can hold size along their length.

Turning and milled features

On machines fitted with live tooling, flats, cross holes and slots can be milled in the same cycle as turning. Some features may still need a separate setup; their position relative to turned datums, tool access and inspection belong in the drawing review.

These are general process principles. The route for your part is set against its drawing, material, inspection requirements and quantity. General process references: Tsugami: guide-bushing support; Citizen: guide-bush applications; Tsugami: live-tool configuration.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Questions about Swiss-type turning

What size parts can you make on Swiss-type lathes?

Up to Ø34 mm outside diameter and 150 mm part length. Larger or longer parts go to our mill-turn machines.

What tolerance can Swiss-type turning hold?

We hold tolerances down to 0.005 mm. Tolerances on your drawing apply as drawn. For untoleranced dimensions we follow the general tolerance standard stated on the drawing; if none is stated, we work to ISO 2768-mK.

Which materials do you machine?

We turn aluminum alloys, brass and copper, stainless steel, carbon steel and specialty alloy steels on our Swiss-type lathes. Tell us the exact grade on your drawing.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Trial runs start from 200 pieces; regular production runs start from 2,000. Send the quantity breaks you want compared.

What is the typical lead time?

Typical lead time is 15–20 days. Large batches or outside finishing can take longer; your quotation states the date for your order.

Can flats and cross holes be made in the same setup?

Often, yes. With live tooling, flats, cross holes and slots can be milled in the same cycle as turning. The drawing review confirms whether a separate operation is needed.
