PROCESS FIT

Why turning and Swiss-type support matter for shafts

A shaft may look simple until a small diameter, long unsupported section and cross feature appear on the same drawing. Turning establishes the main axis and the steps along it. Flats, slots or radial holes then need a location relative to that axis and to a shoulder or end face.

01

Support slender stock near the cut

Swiss-type turning suits slender bar-stock parts. In guide-bush mode, the bushing supports the bar close to the cutting point while the material advances. Reducing the unsupported length helps support small-diameter sections during cutting. The drawing determines the support and tooling arrangement.

02

Keep cross features in context

A turned shaft can also have flats, slots or cross holes. With suitable live tooling, some features can be machined in the turning route; their position relative to mating diameters and shoulders remains a drawing and inspection question.

03

Choose the route from the part

Our factory has Swiss-type and mill-turn equipment. A short, robust pin may use a different route from a long slender shaft. We select a candidate process after reviewing diameter, length, material, feature access and expected production quantity.

PHOTOGRAPHED GEOMETRY

Stepped shafts, small pins and cross-axis forms

The main photograph shows a stepped shaft with radial cross holes and an annular shoulder. Smaller components and cross-axis forms show other arrangements of turned and side features. Numbered marks identify the shoulder and holes on the shaft, providing a shared reference when discussing a similar component and its mating surfaces.

FACTORY SCOPE

Published manufacturing range

The stated factory range covers many part types. For a slender shaft, diameter alone cannot establish feasibility: overall length, unsupported section, stock, cross features and the intended inspection method all affect the route. Use the small-diameter guide as context, then let the drawing define the actual part.

BATCH PLANNING

Compare quantities for shafts & pins

Pins and shafts often return as repeat purchases, so comparing one controlled revision across 200, 500, 1,000, 2,000 pieces can be useful. Spreading one fixed setup over 2,000 rather than 200 parts makes its share per part 1/10 as large; it does not set the final quoted unit price.

AFTER YOU SEND

From shafts & pins drawing to reply

  1. 01

Send a drawing or start with a description

For a shaft or pin inquiry, include the drawing revision, smallest and largest turned diameters, overall length, material and requested batch. Point out any functional shoulder, fit, cross hole or slot. For press-fit pins, give the fit diameter, tolerance and mating hole. The RFQ checklist covers inspection records and packaging.

  2. 02

    We review the complete component

We assess geometry, material, inspection and quantity together.

  3. 03

Receive a reply and agree the next step

We reply from info@nowcnc.com about the next step. Sending an inquiry does not place an order.

BUYER QUESTIONS

Questions about shafts & pins

Can Swiss-type turning help with a slender shaft?

Often, yes. A guide bushing can support slender bar stock close to the cutting point while material feeds through the machine. We have Swiss-type lathes; the actual route depends on your shaft diameter, length, features, stock and required checks.

What shaft features can be reviewed together?

Turned shoulders and mating diameters can be assessed alongside cross holes, flats or slots. The relationship among those features matters as much as their individual sizes; the drawing defines the datum and the inspection requirements for your part.

Are the photographed shafts standard parts?

No. We produce custom shafts and pins against an agreed drawing. The photographs show steps, shoulders and cross features on parts photographed in our factory. Each inquiry carries its own geometry, material and production quantity.
